PADI scuba diving courses range from entry levels (such as Scuba Diver and Open Water Diver) to master scuba diver and a range of dive professional certificates. PADI scuba diving courses are performance based programs, and at the introductory level emphasize practical knowledge, safety and motor skills.

The PADI standardized learning components are divided into theory and practical skills development. Dive theory is mainly conveyed by way of self-study with confirmation of the student's level of mastery in standardized scuba diving knowledge review sessions with a scuba instructor. Practical scuba diving skills mastery is obtained through confined water training (pools or relative shallow water) and performance evaluations in open water. After completion of each course, the diver is awarded a scuba diving certification.
